Telenor Launches Open Lab to Drive Innovation and Collaboration

Telenor has launched Open Lab, a new testbed designed to accelerate technological innovation through collaboration with partners, startups, and customers. The platform aims to foster sustainable growth by enabling businesses to test and develop emerging technologies in a controlled environment.
“We are launching Open Lab to explore how we can innovate better and faster with partners, startups, and customers to create sustainable growth for Telenor and value to society,” said Cathal Kennedy, Acting EVP and Group Chief Technology Officer at Telenor. “We believe it's together that we shape the future of society in win-win partnerships.”
Initially, Open Lab will focus on next-generation network technologies, leveraging 5G capabilities such as network slicing, O-RAN, mobile private networks, and edge solutions. Telenor has already conducted successful experiments using these technologies in areas like self-driving cars, forestry, and drone-based mission-critical services.
The initiative includes specialized testing facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Svalbard, Norway. The Svalbard facility, one of the northernmost 5G-enabled locations, will focus on mission-critical services and regional autonomy. In Gothenburg, the lab at Lindholmen Science Park will explore AI-driven predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring, and worker safety solutions.
By adopting a partner-based approach, Telenor aims to co-create solutions that address real-world challenges across industries. Open Lab represents a commitment to driving technological advancement while ensuring practical applications that benefit businesses and society.
