Ericsson and One New Zealand have announced a five-year partnership to modernize One NZ’s core network, enhancing 5G capabilities for faster, more secure, and energy-efficient connectivity. The upgrade will improve streaming, gaming, and remote work experiences while enabling businesses and government enterprises to leverage innovations like network slicing, massive IoT, and automation.

“This partnership enables us to create a high-performing, more secure, and resilient network with environmental sustainability benefits, including greater energy efficiency,” said Kieran Byrne, Chief Technology Officer at One NZ. “By allowing businesses and developers to innovate using our network, we are creating an ecosystem that will support the next wave of digital applications and services.”

The modernization will introduce open APIs, allowing businesses in sectors such as banking, transport, and manufacturing to build tailored applications. Deployment is set to begin in 2025, with Ericsson providing a cloud-native, dual-mode 5G Core solution that unifies One NZ’s 4G and 5G networks, incorporating AI, automation, and robust cybersecurity.

“Our partnership with One NZ will deliver a secure, scalable, and efficient 5G Core network that supports both consumer and enterprise innovation,” said Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand. “Together, we’re enabling the connectivity and digital transformation that will drive New Zealand’s future.”

By integrating these advanced capabilities, One NZ aims to strengthen its position as a leader in next-generation connectivity while supporting its vision of a digitally connected Aotearoa New Zealand.
