Digip Puts Trademark Search Inside Claude and ChatGPT
The legaltech firm is betting that free in-chat access will do more for its customers than another paid subscription tool.
Stockholm-based software and trademark protection company Digip launched a free trademark search tool on Tuesday that plugs directly into Claude and ChatGPT, letting entrepreneurs and corporate lawyers check brand names against registries in more than 190 countries without leaving their chat window.
The tool runs on the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, a standard that lets AI assistants pull in outside data and services. Users sign up for a Digip account, add the company's MCP server as a connector, and ask the assistant whether a given name is available as a trademark in a specific market. Digip returns similarity scores, based on phonetic, spelling and meaning-based matches drawn from licensed trademark data, rather than a legal opinion.
Digip, founded in 2019, earns revenue from trademark clearance, registration and enforcement work, not software subscriptions, which is why it can give the search tool away. Users get five searches a month free with additional searches priced at one euro each.
"We don't need to monetize the trademark technology in the same way, because it's infrastructure we use to deliver our legal services," Digip CEO Viktor Johansson said in an interview.
Rival services, including one from intellectual property data firm Clarivate, have also built MCP connectors, but Johansson said those tools are typically walled off behind an existing paid subscription. Digip's version is open to anyone with a free account, and it links users to a network of trademark attorneys for a human review of the results.
"Instead of trying to put a wrapper around an LLM, the LLM becomes a wrapper around data that's specifically validated, proven and backed up with human support by a company like Digip," Johansson said. "I think that's cool, because it eliminates some of the concerns of using these solutions."
Digip said filing capability is planned next, and it is in early talks with Microsoft on a listing in the Azure Marketplace.
